Nick Clegg said on the Radio 4 today programme that it is not acceptable to leave debts to be collected by future generations, excusing the massive cuts in public expenditure in the budget. Let's remind him that nuclear waste leaves a legacy of liability for at least ten thousand years, much of which will not be recovered from the industry by the nuclear levy, leaving significant risk to the public purse. CANE have long since been concerned that the measurement of the health effects of nuclear radiation have relied heavily on the figures from the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). For the first time the ICRP figures have been called into question in a peer reviewed scientific context (see http://www.mdpi.com/1660-4601/6/12/3105 ). We will be calling on government to comment on this study and to assess its impact on the regulatory framework and the assumed safe levels of radiation.
