Every new nuclear power station the government builds will have to store intermediate and high level nuclear waste until the government has permission to build a deep level repository; the government is asking them to plan to do this for fifty years or more! There is no safe way to dispose of nuclear waste and regulators have refused permission for such a deep level repository twice in the past, as recently as 1999. Do you blame us for saying "Not in our backyard?"
In 2004 the government agreed that nuclear power was never likely to be cost effective. The sustainable development commision says that nuclear power should not be part of our generating mix. Concerned scientists in the US and the UK both agree that nuclear power is dangerous and unnecessary to meet our energy needs.

Senior staff from British Energy said in a public meeting that they were unaware of the results of this groundbreaking study.

The government has been condemed for holding unfair consultations on nuclear power on two separate occasions, once in the courts as a result of a judicial review, and once as a result of a criticism of their market research consultants by the Market Research Bureau Standards Board. It is our view that this means that the government has no mandate to proceed with its policy of building new nuclear power stations.
